Your rockin’ recycling revelry is ready to recycle your face off!
We at Recycalusa are extremely fortunate to provide a top-notch program for such an awesome festival. Everyone at Wakarusa is so kind, respectful, appreciative, encouraging, dedicated, and, most importantly, helpful to keeping the festival grounds clean and litter free. We want to say a million “Thank You’s” to ALL of YOU who mind their litter, recycle, and tread lightly upon the park. This is Recycalusa’s fourth year at the festival, and its success is solely due to all the great volunteers, staff, and festival attendants who never cease to keep the festival clean and amazing. Thank you! We really couldn’t do it without you!
With that, we just want to remind everyone of 5 easy steps that we can all do to help play our part in keeping the festival litter free and sustainably clean.
Just say NO to trash by choosing all re-usable over disposables. Think classic coolers over Styrofoam, re-usable and freely refillable water bottles over cases of the single-use bottles, and sturdy cups, plates, and cutlery over disposable.
Remember that littering includes everything from the biggest cups and cans to the smallest bottle caps and cigarette butts. Don’t forget an ashtray for your campsite; a good ‘ol tin can will do the job. Smokin’ while walkin’? Just safely snuff your cigarette THEN toss into a trash can. No butts about it!
Recycle, recycle, recycle! Hopefully you’ll notice a super easy color system for all 240 custom painted recycling barrel tops: ALUMINUM, PLASTIC, and GLASS. You’ll recycle so much more, por favor, if you use your head and put aluminum in red or realize blue for plastic (how fantastic!) or put glass in yellow like a good fellow.
You’ll also be given 2 bags for your campsite, green for recycling and clear for trash. If you need more bags, just stop by any information booth, the Recycalusa booth, or a St. Bernard’s cart. At the end of the festival, neatly tie up your bags and take them to a black-top street for quick and easy pickup.
Speaking of the Recycalusa Booth… Every year, we have fantastic and FREE giveaways at the Recycalusa Booth to give to people who bring us and sort their bag of recycling. Freebies include limited Recycalusa t-shirts, merchandise from bands playing at Wakarusa, and gift-certificates to popular food joints. There is also a FREE raffle for BIG prizes such as tickets to next year’s Wakarusa and a custom made Fat Tire Cruiser Bike! Just check your program map for the location of the Recycalusa booth.
Composting, a Wakarusa first! We would like to formally introduce the first annual composting program at Wakarusa, hereafter dubbed Wormarusa in honor of the famous earth munching annelids. In the main festival grounds, keep an eye out for special containers ready to accept your food bits and compostable vending cups, plates, and silverwa-, errr better yet,-degradaware.
Leave your glass at home. It’s heavy, it breaks, and it’s a general pain in our recycling rears. The money from recycling aluminum cans benefits local not-for-profits while glass costs money to transport to the recycling center. Shudder at the thought of aluminum encased beverages? Simply rinse the glass bottles and take them home with you, and this is especially handy if you’re from a bottle law $tate.
